Foundation:
The monastery was founded or endowed by Doge Justinian Particiaco in his will of 829, and his wife and daughter in law Felicia and Romana were charged with completing it. It may have been deliberately associated with the cult of S. Zaccaria like the churches near the imperial palaces in Constantinople and Ravenna, even before it aquired the saint’s relics.
