Monastery of S. Ciriaco (Rome)

Monastery data
Name:
S. Ciriaco (Rome)
Foundation:
Alberic’s 3 cousins Marozia (II), Stefania and Theodora (III) ( not sisters as the foundation story has it) founded a monastery for noble religious women, with a church dedicated to S. Stephen on the Via Lata. While looking for the body of a saint to give to it, they spoke to a holy man who suggesed the arm and head of St Cyriacus, buried in the cemetery of the same name on the Via Ostiense. Having sent the body onwards, they then put the head on a cart, but the oxen refuse to budge from the cemetery. The ladies promised many gifts and the oxen moved the cart from the Ostiense along the Tiber to the Via Portuense. When the cart arrived to the Campo Mervi, again the relic stopped. With promises of more gifts, the cart moved as far as Criptule, which was the property of the ladies’ family, where it again stopped. The ladies promised to grant to the saint all the land through which the cart would pass, which belonged to the family up to Porta Portese. From there through Trastevere, the Isola Licaonia, East of e thCapitoline Hill and the Clivus Argentarius, they reached the Via Lata. There the cart stopped and refused to move further. The whole city, hearing of this, including the Senate and the Roman aristocracy, asked Pope Agapitus II for advice. He advised them to let the oxen free to go wherever Providence led them, while leading the people in prayer. The oxen moved on to the door of the monastery. Marozia swore to donate 3 poderi outside Porta S. Lorenzo (Silva Maior, Bolaga, Reatine) with their appurtenances. The pope enshrined the relic and orders the monastic church to have its name changed from S. Stefano to S. Ciriaco. Source: MS Vaticano Latin 5516 (now lost), edited in Martinelli, Il Primo Trofeo, pp. 67-76 then Cavazzi (1908), pp. 387-389. When a quarrel arose between the abbess and Pope John XV, the Emperor Otto [III] was told by the pope to go to S. Ciriaco and, using his royal authority, to get the arm and shoulder of the saint. Abbess Pretiosa then went to the Emperor and complained bitterly, while he, hearing of her noble family, recognised her as a relative, asked and obtained her forgiveness and promised any other gift. The abbess makes him ask Emperor Basil to give her in exchange relic of St Nicholas (a tooth), while Otto sent the relic of the arm to Bamberg, where he founded a monastery dependent on S. Ciriaco in Rome. The abbess with Count Palatine sent by Otto, with much money and letters to the Emperor Basil, went to Constantinople to request a relic of S. Nicholas. Despite his sadness at losing such a relic, but because of his kinship with Otto, Basil gave to abbess a relic of a tooth in a golden vase, together with images and other precious gifts (purple textiles with gold thread). Pretiosa came back to Rome with the relic and started building the church of S. Nicola. This was finished by her successor Abbess Agatha, who commissioned the roof and wall paintings. Ed. Martinelli, p. 125 and Cavazzi, pp. 391-394.
